Q: Is there any way to use the Extract feature with a 16-bit image?

A: Unfortunately, no...Extract can't be used with 16-bit images. But, that doesn't mean that you can't use an 8-bit copy of the 16-bit image and Extract to create an alpha channel.  Here's how:
1. Open the 16-bit image in Photoshop.
2. Image> Duplicate.
3. Image> Mode> 8-Bits/Channel.
4. Filter> Extract.  Extract the subject.
5. Refine the extraction as necessary with the Eraser and History Brush (or any other technique).
6. Command-click on the Layer 0 thumbnail in the Layers palette.
7. Select> Save Selection.
8. Click on the 16-bit original to make it the active window.
9. Select> Load Selection.
10. Select the 8-bit copy in the top pop-up menu.
11. Load the saved selection.  Your subject is now selected.
12. Command-J/Control-J to copy to a new layer.  This new layer has the "extracted" subject (in 16-bit color).
13. Delete or hide the original background layer as desired, leaving just your extracted original visible

"I have been a photographer for a long time, but when I made the switch to digital I found Photoshop to be very overwhelming. You have made this learning experience much easier. I watch the weekly Photoshop TV broadcasts, and the tutorials on your homepage have made my life much more tolerable. In addition I have purchased a number of plug-ins for Photoshop. I have probably come close to paying for a year's membership by what I have saved through the discounts that you have arranged with various vendors."
-Sheldon Simpson

"I've been a NAPP member for some time, and I just have to say how much being a member has helped me perform my job as a magazine editor, layout designer and Creative Suite CS2 user. I put together six magazine issues a year, and whenever I am seeking some new technique to make my layouts look better, along comes a new copy of Photoshop User or Layers magazine, or one of your video tips...like Cory Barker's recent one "Wild West Grunge". GREAT! Plus, I've attended Dave Cross seminars and his (and Matt's) video tips have helped me so many times I can't remember them all. Scott's latest book on Digital Photography is also in my camera bag! Thanks for all that you do, especially for guys like me who are essentially a "one man production department"".

Bruce Fraser Receives NAPP Lifetime Achievement Award

We here at NAPP are proud to announce that on December 10th, 2006, Bruce Fraser - best-selling author, internationally recognized Adobe® Photoshop® trainer, Photoshop® Hall of Famer, and co-founder and principal of Pixel Genius LLC - was named the recipient of the first NAPP Lifetime Achievement Award.

According to Scott Kelby, president of NAPP, "I don't think there's a Photoshop professional out there, that doesn't owe a significant chunk of their expertise, and a big debt of gratitude, to Bruce Fraser. He almost single-handedly shaped the way we work with color, how we process RAW images in Photoshop, and even how we sharpen our photos. I think it's safe to say that this industry wouldn't be where it is today without Bruce's input, advice, and guidance. He's a gifted and talented instructor who has dedicated his life to taking the mystery out of digital imaging technology, and that's why we're proud to honor him as the first recipient of NAPP's Lifetime Achievement Award."

Sadly, on Saturday, December 16th, Bruce passed away after battling terminal lung cancer. He was at home with his wife, Angela, and close friends at the time, and his passing was peaceful. Bruce, a Buddhist, will be cremated and his ashes returned to his native home of Scotland. The thoughts and prayers of the NAPP staff, as well as those of a good many in the industry that he worked so hard to advance, are with him and his family at this most difficult time.

Bruce was one of the world's most leading authorities on color and digital imaging, and is the co-author of the award-winning Real World Photoshop series, as well as the bestselling books Real World Color Management and Real World Camera Raw. His amazing insights have made him a sought-after speaker and consultant on image reproduction, color correction, and color management, and he is widely regarded as the father of digital color management. He also played an invaluable role in the development of Photoshop as an Alpha and Beta tester for every version of the program. During his celebrated career, Bruce has written literally hundreds of articles for MacWeek and MacUser magazines, as well as penning the popular "Out of Gamut" column for CreativePro.com. In December 2002, he partnered with five other industry experts to form Pixel Genius LLC - a company dedicated to creating leading-edge products and services for the photographic and digital imaging industries.

NAPP Launches Adobe Photoshop CS3 Learning Center

On December 14th, Adobe Systems Incorporated announced that registered users of Adobe® Photoshop® Creative Suite 2 would be able to download a free test beta version of Creative Suite 3 featuring several new features and noted improvements on the most popular ones from CS2.

Immediately after the announcement, NAPP launched the Photoshop CS3 Learning Center, a comprehensive resource specifically dedicated to the CS3 beta that offers NAPP members the most complete library of tips and tutorials available anywhere for learning and utilizing the new software.

Because CS3 is a beta, the features are locked and the software is being tested for general release. That said, should you find something of a bug in the program, by all means let them know by clicking here. Along those same lines, Adobe is not providing tech support for Photoshop CS3 beta. However, there is a beta forum at Adobe Labs, and there is a dedicated CS3 forum on the NAPP member website.

In the first 72-hours after the Photoshop CS3 beta was released, Adobe Labs reportedly recorded more than 100,000 user downloads. The full beta is downloadable by licensed Photoshop CS2 users, and a limited-time trial version is available publicly. Both versions include such new and improved features as Non-destructive Smart Filters, a Quick Selection tool, Refine Edge, Automatic Layer alignment and blending, and Black & White conversion.

The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Learning Center features exclusive video tutorials by NAPP's Photoshop instructors Scott Kelby, Dave Cross, Matt Kloskowski and Corey Barker. The site also includes an overview of new CS3-specific features, an exclusive interview with John Nack of Adobe Systems Incorporated, a special episode of Adobe Photoshop TV, a free 7-day online training course and other helpful training aids and user resources. Additionally, there is content available specifically to NAPP members on the website.

"Official NAPP Certification" Logo Revealed

As of January, you'll notice that certain Adobe® Creative® Suite related magazines, books, DVDs, seminars and more will be carrying an "Official NAPP Certification" seal. This seal indicates that the training and content has been created, produced and/or sponsored by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals and meets the highest standards in quality.

According to Dave Moser, executive publisher of Photoshop User and Layers, "We decided to start placing the Official NAPP Certification seal on our publications, seminar tour materials, DVDs, and other training as a service to NAPP members. There is a lot of training out there, and some materials or courses are better than others. What we have done is come up with a way of letting members know what training follows the same standards for quality and educational content as you'd find in Photoshop User, Layers, and Adobe Illustrator Techniques."

Available for both Mac and PC, PhotoRecovery® for Digital Media is a very specific program designed to recover images from digital camera memory cards. We at Newswire tested the latest version of the software for Mac...this is what we learned:

The application installs with absolutely no fuss. And, while most users will most likely download the software, we opted to install it from a packaged CD...complete with an instruction manual, which...honestly...we didn't need. It really is that simple...the software is incredibly easy to understand and intuitive to use. Just mount your memory card (CF, SD, etc.) with a card reader, select the card from a list of drives in the window at the upper left, and click the Scan button...

That's it! Told you it was simple.

The software reads every sector of your media's memory and rebuilds your image files even if the directory is damaged or deleted. The only downfall is that all of the recovered images are placed in a folder deceptively named "Recovered." This was a complete let down...as we were hoping to have to search our drives for a folder named something like "PR-121406."

Now, while we couldn't seem to find any damaged cards lying around, we tested the software on several CF cards that had been formatted and both our camera and computer said were 'empty.' We figured this worked just as well for testing purposes because all memory cards only erase the directory when they are formatted...they don't bother erasing all of your images. Only taking more pictures...which are written over the old data...or intentionally writing blank data over old images can really erase a memory card. Oh...speaking of, guess what? PhotoRecovery® for Digital Media actually has a Wipe function just to write blank data so you can actually empty a card. Note to self: when you put a wiped card in your camera again, you'll need to format it with the camera to use it.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, we definitely like this software. It's easy to install, easy to use, and more powerful than you might think. Even though every camera company writes to write images in their own special way...and memory card makers have their idiosyncrasies too... PhotoRecovery® for Digital Media handled everything we threw at it. And, if you get a newer model camera or newer models of cards, all you have to do is download the latest upgrade from the web.

At $39 (plus $10 for 1 year of upgrades) it's a worthwhile investment for anyone with a digital camera...even if you never have a corrupt card or damaged files. Consider it affordable safety net, because there's bound to be a time when you...or a friend, or the dog, or angry poltergeists, or whatever...accidentally erases a card.
