6 Steps to Build College Financial Literacy
One of the most expensive investment families make is the decision to
attend college. In the last several decades the number of students
who aspire to a college education has risen dramatically. With
today's emphasis on academic testing and college admission
requirements, we are often too busy to consider some far-reaching
implications and may overlook some of the basic life skills our
students need as they transition to adulthood.
Two of these critical basics are Career Literacy(TM) and
financial literacy, which intersect during the college years.
Career Literacy
is based on self-knowledge and developing the knowledge and skills
needed to navigate today's career and workplace successfully.
Financial literacy is the knowledge and skills needed to manage
personal finances responsibly and to live within one's means.
Having a good sense of what your investment will purchase is only
smart. Some facts to consider:

Finding Funds for College -- at Any Age
Today the statement, "I have homework to do," may be just as often
heard from a parent as it is from a high school or college student in
the family. Education is no longer reserved just for the young;
lifelong learning is an expectation for everyone. Sometimes that
means returning to college for a course, a certificate program, or an
entire degree.
No matter what the age of the student, financing one's education
is always a challenge. Here are five great resources for both adult
students (24 years and up) as well as traditional college students
(18-23 years of age)

Details, Details: Your Clerical Aptitude
Do you consider yourself a detail-oriented person? For example, are
you quick to notice typographical and numerical errors? Or do you
tend to overlook minor clerical mistakes? Are you quick and accurate
when it comes to scanning information or copying down numbers such as
phone numbers or addresses? Or do you notice that it pays to take
your time and double-check your work? Your answers to these questions
may give you some insight into your Clerical (Perceptual Speed and
Accuracy) aptitude.
Clerical aptitude, measured by the
Ball Aptitude Battery®
is important for performing a wide variety of skills and tasks such
as proofreading, filling out paperwork or online forms like
spreadsheets, reading, inspecting, filing, and checking.
Your level of natural talent for performing Clerical tasks
impacts a range of activities found in many jobs.

Career Vision Seeks Parental Advice
Usually families come to Career Vision for guidance. Last month,
Career Vision turned to our families for feedback on our services and
advice on outreach strategies. Thank you to all parents who took the
time to respond to our online survey questions. The winner of the
$100 American Express Gift Card is Steve Luckett of Bolingbrook, IL.
Some highlights from the survey:
- The two reasons parents deemed most important in selecting
Career Vision's services were concern that their child needed more
support and direction (57%) and increased confidence in their child's
major and career choice (21%).
- Over 97% of our parents have talked about Career Vision to
others. This is great news, since our best referrals come from our
satisfied clients and their families.
- Parents endorsed Career Vision working closely with high school
guidance department staff, college admissions and career services
offices, and having information tables at local college nights. Ads,
flyers and emails sent out by schools also made the list.
- The two kinds of organizations they recommended to reach more
parents were parents associations and church youth groups. So
readers, you can help. If you would like to suggest an organization
and contact person who should know about the work we do to ease
parents' concerns and improve students' college major and career
decisions, please call or
email us today!
