The unique Osteoporosis Prevention Center at HSS, founded to help prevent and treat osteoporosis, has recently been awarded facility accreditation for bone densitometry from the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), enabling the Center to join an elite group of facilities with proven excellence in providing skeletal diagnostic services. This clinically-based training program was developed for experienced physical therapists seeking to specialize in sports physical therapy. The mission of the program is to provide the therapist with a comprehensive, structured program of clinical and didactic experiences for the development of advanced critical reasoning and clinical skills in sports injury management and rehabilitation. Early Mobilization following Adult Acquired Flatfoot Deformity Reconstruction
Jonathan T. Deland, MD

In this pilot study, we will identify 36 patients with Posterior Tibial Tendon Insufficiency who will be undergoing a flatfoot reconstruction. These patients will be informed of an early mobilization time following the operation (shorter time spent in the cast and non-weightbearing) and randomly assigned to either the early mobilization group or normal group. The primary outcome will of this study will be the measurement of pain, as determined by the patient on a continuous scale (Visual Analog Scale) from 1 to 10. Learn more

The Sports Rehabilitation and Performance Center at Hospital for Special Surgery is proud to present its first ACL Injury Prevention Program. This two-part event seeks to educate young athletes (novice through advanced), coaches, trainers, and parents about ACL injury and prevention. The first session consists of a demonstration and lecture of specific exercises and prevention techniques; the second is a hands-on interactive lab for practice and hands-on training. Learn more

This is partly due to the way dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA. With so many supplements available, it is difficult to sort out what is truly useful and helpful. Beginner Yoga-lates and Intermediate Yoga-lates

Yoga-lates is a popular form of exercise that blends the best of Yoga and Pilates. Both techniques combine to help to improve stamina and posture while developing a general sense of well-being. In the beginner level class, participants focus on integrating breathing with movements and basic stretching, while learning the importance of core muscle strength for better posture. In the intermediate level class, the focus will be on elements learned in the beginner level class, along with more advanced movement sequences to improve strength and flexibility. Learn more

Pilates is a series of specific movements designed to strengthen the powerhouse: muscles of the abdomen, back and waist (torso). Advanced Pilates is recommended for the beginning Pilates mat student who has a clear understanding of the basic fundamentals and exercises, but needs to work on improving strength and flexibility. Prerequisite: Completion of Beginner Level Class or permission from instructor. Learn more

Stretch Yoga for Older Adults: An Introductory Course

Stretch and tone your body with simple, gentle body movements that willhelp you feel active, energized and relaxed. Stretch yoga combines: 1) Gentle stretches from sitting and standing positions 2) Breathing techniques for relaxation and stress reduction and 3) Visualization and concentration skills to develop an awareness and sensitivity of your personal energy. Better Balance for Older Adults

This course consists of unique exercises selected for individuals who would like to increase their balance control and potentially decrease the risk of falls. This program incorporates a set of slow, simple movements adapted from a variety of Eastern modalities, including Yoga, T'ai Chi Chih, and Chi Gung. Chairs will be provided to hold for balance, if needed. Learn more
