Message from our Vice President of Marketing and Worldwide Sales

By now, you've heard talk about AdvancedMC™ and MicroTCA™ architectures becoming an emerging hardware choice for COTS-based applications. When the MicroTCA specification was introduced, it promised to bring with it the best parts of its big brother, AdvancedTCA® (ATCA), like hot-swap, IPMI management, and a switched backplane; while opening the door to new smaller-scale and/or cost-conscious markets and applications.

By design, MicroTCA is physically smaller and consumes much less power, which brings the potential to meet application needs outside telecommunications (ATCA's primary market niche). Areas previously left out in the cold with regards to next-generation embedded systems –aerospace and defense, edge telecom, medical, digital imaging, industrial, commercial – represent markets better served by a smaller form factor like MicroTCA than with ATCA.

In the two years since the specification's adoption, MicroTCA has gained a lot of hype as the low-cost architecture of the future. Until recently, early design costs were still high for most embedded design budgets and prevented wider adoption. That began to change in April when Performance Technologies rolled out a revolutionary break-through in the MTC5070; our highly-integrated, low-profile platform that by design makes cost savings a reality.

If the feedback we've been receiving about this product is any indication, MicroTCA is finally generating the interest and design consideration as was originally intended. Barely two months old, our MTC5070 has stirred up significant interest and has seen several deployments.

Last month, the integrated MTC5070 platform was selected as Military Embedded Systems Editor's Choice. And, we have recently expanded our MicroTCA platform lineup to include a new application-ready model called the AMP5070. By packaging the base platform with our powerful AMC121 Core 2 Duo compute module, and NexusWare® carrier-grade Linux operating system and development environment, developers now have a complete MicroTCA development system with out-of-the-box functionality for $4295.

Engage with us and give us your feedback . . . we’re here to make you successful.
