The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible

by A. J. Jacobs

From Publishers Weekly

What would it require for a person to live all the commandments of the Bible for an entire year? That is the question that animates this hilarious, quixotic, thought-provoking memoir from Jacobs (The Know-It-All). He didn't just keep the Bible's better-known moral laws (being honest, tithing to charity and trying to curb his lust), but also the obscure and unfathomable ones: not mixing wool with linen in his clothing; calling the days of the week by their ordinal numbers to avoid voicing the names of pagan gods; trying his hand at a 10-string harp; growing a ZZ Top beard; eating crickets; and paying the babysitter in cash at the end of each work day. (He considered some rules, such as killing magicians, too legally questionable to uphold.) In his attempts at living the Bible to the letter, Jacobs hits the road in highly entertaining fashion to meet other literalists, including Samaritans in Israel, snake handlers in Appalachia, Amish in Lancaster County, Pa., and biblical creationists in Kentucky. Throughout his journey, Jacobs comes across as a generous and thoughtful (and, yes, slightly neurotic) participant observer, lacing his story with absurdly funny cultural commentary as well as nuanced insights into the impossible task of biblical literalism. "How would you know what happy is if you've never been otherwise."

How important is your health? Would you like to live a healthy, productive life to 100? Well Thomas Perls at Boston University Medical school has some suggestions for you. He has the world's largest study of people over 100 years old - over 900 of them. Here are some of his findings and comments:

In some areas 88 is the average life span - their homogenous lifestyle includes: 1) Eating vegetarian 2) Don't smoke 3) Don't drink alcohol 4) Exercise regularly 5) Eat in moderation 6) Major focus on family and religion. I'm 100% sure these 6 factors are nothing new but with 70% of our population overweight and 30+% obese, maybe it's time to get serious about our habits.

His acronym for key factors is AGEING:
A = ATTITUDE - positive, optimistic & humor
G = GENETICS = your family history
E = EXERCISE - exercise a minimum of 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week
I = INTEREST - exercise your brain - read - study - do puzzles, etc.
N = NUTRITION - healthy weight
G = GET RID OF SMOKING AND ANTI-AGING QUACKERY.

Here's to a long and healthy life!

Hugo Chavez is the despot dictator of Venezuela - he is working to make his country a "new" socialism.

When it comes to the ease of doing business, Venezuela now ranks six places from the bottom worldwide, between Eritrea and Chad. It also finishes dead last among the region's 31 countries -- and that includes Haiti. In the category of "employing workers", Venezuela ties with Bolivia at No. 177. It is "not possible" to fire a Venezuelan employee. "Starting a business" takes 141 days and in ease of "paying taxes" it ranks No. 174.

-------------------

The World Bank did a study on 170 or so countries on the "ease of doing business." You can see the entire study at www.doingbusiness.org.

Top ten in order were: Singapore, New Zealand, U.S., Hong Kong, Denmark, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and #10, Iceland. Germany came in #20 and France #31.
