Families Seek Experts to Help with Competing Demands
It's not news that families today are juggling competing demands; how they manage is. In response, parents are becoming adept at seeking out and employing a variety of expert resources to make their lives easier. And they are spreading the word to help other challenged families.
A 2005 Families and Work Institute study reports that one in three American employees is chronically overworked, while 54 % have felt overwhelmed in the past month by the amount of work they had to complete.
Four factors contribute to this sense of being overworked:
- increased job pressure,
- increased multi-tasking,
- doing work that is not valued, and
- the expectation of availability at all times. Cell phones, personal computers, pagers, email, and flexible work schedules encroach on the healthy boundaries between work and personal time. More on help with competing demands...

Career Vision Partners with Student Leadership Academies
Leadership academy programs across the country develop selected groups of high school students into future business and community leaders. Two local leadership academies have called upon Career Vision's expertise to conduct sessions on Career Literacy(TM) topics: Chase Leadership Academy and DuPage Area Student Leadership Academy.
Chase Leadership Academy is sponsored by JPMorgan Chase, the global financial services firm. The 30 students are enrolled in the Academy of Finance in four Chicago high schools, and meet twice a month from November to April. Through another academy partner, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, students are matched with mentors who are employees of JPMorgan Chase, often supervisors or managers. The interactive sessions are held on bank premises in downtown Chicago and dress code is business casual.
The DuPage Area Student Leadership Academy is coordinated by DuPage County Education-to-Careers and sponsored by local businesses and community organizations. More on leadership academies...
