Keep Fighting The Good Fight!
It's hard to believe another year is nearly gone, with a Presidential election looming in 2008. This is such an exciting time for those that would benefit from therapies that reverse paralysis. More and more often, we hear rumors of a supposed cure. The issue has even featured largely in a popular nighttime TV drama, Friday Night Lights! Yes, many of the rumors are but false promises and far too many of supposed cures are bogus frauds. Look at the big picture, though. The world is beginning to accept what we have believed all along. There can, and there will, be a cure for paralysis. It is no longer a question of "if", just a question of "when". We think the answer will come in stages. Progress is being made with curative therapies around the globe.

It's a daunting task, this one we've been collectively given. It is our job to educate the world about the future of paralysis cure research, and indeed, about the existence of the possibility of a cure! We have to persuade leaders to finance this dream. We have to raise money to supplement that which our leaders deliver. We must encourage researchers to persist, and encourage one another daily to persist with hope and strength. We dare not falter, or time will be lost and another generation will be forced to carry the torch we shoulder.

Together, we can do this. Here's to a successful 2008!

Sincerely,

Christopher & Dana Reeve Paralysis Act-We're Close!
The bill has finally not only been released from House and Senate committees, but has been passed in the House. The next step is the consideration of the full U.S. Senate! Persistence is finally paying off. This is further than the CDRPA has ever gotten before. Odds of it being voted on by the Senate during the 110th Congress look very good. If your Senators are not a co-sponsor of the CDRPA, (see Senate co-sponsors here) drop a line asking for their support! Senate contact info found by entering zip code in white box here.

Do You Ever Feel That You Can't Make A Difference?
U2FP would like to introduce you to one man that makes a difference in the quest for a cure for paralysis. Single-dad Joe White's life changed in an instant, when he was thrown from a mechanical bull at the county fair. He suffered a C 5-6 incomplete spinal cord injury. Suddenly his job was impossible, his Valparaiso, Indiana home inaccessible, convenient transportation just a dream.

Joe overcame those obstacles and refused to be defeated. Joe now attends college for a different career, elementary education. His home has been remodeled, he has an accessible van and his daughter is blossoming into a wonderful young lady. His friendly nature is a blessing when he educates curious folks as they stand in line all over the country. He's been particularly successful at garnering support for stem cell research. Despite all his hard-won successes, Joe still felt the need to do more.

Joe founded a local support group for people with spinal cord injuries. He runs an annual SCI awareness booth at the same county fair at which he was injured. He is an active, valuable participant with U2FP, responsible for the conception and production of the U2FP Myspace page. This summer he decided he had a bit of time on his hands, so he organized a fundraiser walk, raising $17,000 for research and care organizations!
