Save Space in
Your Time Machine

Take a moment to think about what to exclude from Time Machine backups, bearing in mind that these backups are incremental (a file is backed up if it has changed or is new since the last backup). In particular, consider excluding these types of folders:

* Temporary folders whose contents change frequently. For example, you may not want to bother backing up the Downloads folder and the iTunes library's Podcasts folder, since their contents probably aren't very important and can easily be downloaded again in the event of a loss.

* Folders containing very large files whose contents change frequently. A perfect example is the Microsoft Identities folder, for those people who use Microsoft Entourage, which keeps all mail in a single large database file that changes every time you check mail. Similarly, the Parallels folder in your user's Library folder contains the multi-gigabyte Windows disk image file, which changes each time you use Parallels Desktop. If these huge files were copied every time you did a Time Machine backup, your backup volume would fill up rapidly. Back up such folders using a different strategy, even something as simple as manually copying the whole folder to an external drive in the Finder, replacing the previous copy.

Welcome Guests
to Your Mac

When your friends or family want to use your Mac "just for a minute," to check email, surf the Web, or play a game, you can let them log in to the new Guest Account in Leopard. This account, which recreates a virgin home folder each time it's activated, gives them standard user's rights, and keeps them from prying into your personal files. Enable the Guest Account in the Accounts pane of System Preferences, and then switch to it from the Fast User Switching menu (the one with your name in the upper right corner, next to the Spotlight icon).

Update Third-Party Software Before Installing Leopard

If you haven't yet upgraded to Leopard, it's worth going through your third-party software to check for Leopard-compatible updates before you run the Leopard installer. This is especially important for things like plug-ins for Safari and Mail, and any other system enhancements that may modify your system in ways Apple doesn't officially sanction. Many such programs may break under Leopard, but if you upgrade them to compatible versions beforehand, you'll have a smoother upgrade experience.
