Forward to a Colleague
April 22, 2006
Greetings from Unite 2 Fight Paralysis!
Dear Friends-

Time has flown by, and it's nearly time for the Working 2 Walk Symposium and Rally in Washington DC! With the firm belief that preparation can ease worries, U2FP has been busy compiling the information you need for a safe, stress-free trip. The W2W Area Maps page has the details you'll need to get around DC and especially Capitol Hill. Maps of the Metro system, the Rally location, even accessible entrances to the Capitol buildings!

Our Transportation Page offers all the facts we could glean to simplify your DC adventure. Staying in Crystal City? This Airport to Crystal City guide should get you from the airport to your room. If you're having qualms about travelling on the Metro, see our step-by-step guide to Metro travel, and relax! Crystal City to Symposium by Metro, driving directions to the Symposium, parking at the Symposium, it's all here!

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank the friends and sponsors we've had the pleasure of working with these past months. It seems we always rely on the kindnesses of our friends. They never let us down.

We're excited, and we're looking forward to seeing you in DC. We anticipate meeting new friends and reuniting with old ones, as together we Go Forward. We're Working 2 Walk!

Sincerely,
Your friends at Unite 2 Fight Paralysis

The MOST Important Thing To Do In DC!
Visit your legislators about the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act! It's not too late to get an appointment!

When you visit your legislators to talk about the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act, you do more than discuss a piece of legislation. You put a face on the issue! You're no longer an anonymous wheelchair user, glanced at and then forgotten. You're not the invisible family member that copes silently with the daily issues of paralysis. You become a real person, with real dreams and desires.

To maximize this effect, remember to take your camera for a shot with your legislators. You might even staple a picture of yourself to a short bio and put it in your lobbying packet. Every time they look for that CRPA info, they'll be greeted with your face, your reality-and your VOTE!

Legislative Appointments-Start to Finish!
Enter your zipcode in the white box here, then click on the pictures to find your legislator's DC office phone number. Ask for the Scheduler. If you go to voicemail the script below will work; just remember to leave thorough contact information.

"Hello, my name is _____. I'm a constituent and I would like to make an appointment to speak with (Representative X or Senator X) about the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act and why it is important to me. I will be in town on May 2 and would like to have a few minutes after 1:00 to discuss this with the (Representative or Senator)." If you are told that the Representative or Senator is not available on that day, ask to make an appointment with the Legislative Health Aide. Such meetings with Legislative Aides can be very valuable; the aides often influence how a legislator votes.

Please update Betheny on all appointments scheduled!

W2W Symposium at Ronald Reagan Building
The Working 2 Walk Symposium is being hosted April 30 and May 1 at the
Ronald Reagan International Trade Center. This ADA-compliant building is located 2 blocks from the White House at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue (full driving directions here). 3 entrances access the onsite underground parking for 2,000 cars (detailed area map with garage entrances) . Federal Triangle Metro Station is connected to the Reagan Building by a covered passageway.

NOTE: Photo ID required to enter Reagan Building!

Rally for the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act!

Christopher Reeve fought a long battle for legislation to enhance research into the care and cure of people stricken with paralysis. On May 2, we again seize the opportunity to advance a bill that supports and expands paralysis research, rehabilitation, and quality of life! Even if you're not going to DC, you can easily email your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act.

The CRPA is designed to benefit nearly all people that cope with paralysis from dysfunction of the central nervous system. This brief synopsis will help you understand how. More in-depth knowledge is found in the full text of the CRPA. The CRPA Cosponsor Status is updated daily to inform us of how the bill is faring!

W2W Rally: May 2, Upper Senate Park!

The W2W Rally for passage of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act will be held May 2 at 11 a.m. in Upper Senate Park. Located at the intersection of Delaware and Constitution, Upper Senate Park is between Union Station and the Capitol, just across Delaware from the Russell Senate Building. Detailed Rally Day map with written instructions here. Featuring exciting speakers and hosted by Susan Sarandon, rallying is a sure-fire way to build up steam for those legislative visits!

Parking on Capitol Hill has always been a problem; today's heightened security has magnified this issue. We must stress the folly of driving a car on Capitol Hill! If you feel you must drive, the most reliable place to park your vehicle is the Union Station Parking Garage, at 30 Massachusetts Ave. NE, behind Union Station. With 1,000 spaces currently available, the Garage is multi-tiered and has elevator, escalator and stairwells. Parking is available 24/7. Only one entrance to the garage is currently open. It is located at Massachusetts Avenue NE at Columbus Circle
Note: Maximum height for passenger vehicles is 8 feet!

Call 202-898-1950 for rates and driving directions.

Post-Rally Lunch at the Longworth!
Lobbyists with legislator's appointments can take the quick 1/2 mile trip to the south side of the Hill for a quick and casual lunch. Free vouchers will be provided for lunch at the cafeteria in the Longworth House Office Building. (see detailed W2W Rally Day map) Staff from the Christopher Reeve Foundation will be available to answer questions.

Can't Attend W2W?

Join the W2W Wall of Hope!

For anyone who cannot attend the Rally/Symposium but would like to be there in spirit, there is an option. Send a photo with a brief statement of your support to pmdello@yahoo.com. Include your date of injury, injury level, name and hometown. Caregivers and anyone interested in paying tribute to the Reeve legacy may also participate. The photos together with statements will be displayed at the Symposium for attendees to view as a Wall of Hope.

"Hope is the companion of power, and mother of success; for who so hopes strongly has within him the gift of miracles."--Samuel Smiles
