Using the fill handle in Excel
Investintech is pleased to announce that Bill Jelen (aka Mr. Excel),
one of the World's leading MS Excel consultants, has graciously
agreed to provide insightful monthly MS Excel tips for the
Investintech newsletter.
Bill is the author of the book "Learn Excel from Mr. Excel" and
is also the brains behind the leading MS Excel resource on the
Internet - www.mrexcel.com.
Here is his November Excel Tip:
You have 5321 rows of data in columns A through E. You've just
entered a formula in cell F2 and need to copy that formula down to
all of the rows with data. Select cell F2.
Notice that the lower right corner of the cellpointer box
contains a square dot. This dot is called the fill handle. Many
people try to drag the fill handle to extend the formula, but this
results in frustration when you go cruising past row 5321 at
light-speed. Instead of dragging the fill handle, simply select cell
F2 and double-click the fill handle.
Provided that there is data in the column immediately to the left
or right of the selected cell, Excel will copy the formula down until
it encounters a blank cell in the adjoining column.
