Filmspotting Gets Terrestrial
Hello Filmspotter,

From Chicago, this is The Dope Sheet... I'm Adam Kempenaar.

We'll announce this next week on the show but wanted to share the news first with you very special Dope Sheet subscribers... Starting June 24, Filmspotting can be heard on Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ 91.5 FM) every last Saturday of the month at 8 pm. WBEZ is switching to an all-talk format and we're very excited that they've deemed Filmspotting worthy of a slot.

What does this mean for you? Not a whole lot, really. The show that will air on WBEZ will actually be the podcast you'll hear the Tuesday prior with a few format modifications -- 60 minutes, longer music breaks (probably), a DVD review segment where we'll replay some of our comments on a new release or two, and a separate Top 5 list.

The first WBEZ edition of Filmspotting -- available for subscribers on Tuesday, June 20 -- will feature our Top 5 Movies of the Year... So Far. Send your list or any other comments to feedback@filmspotting.net.

In the Tiny Country of Parmistan...
Warner Home Video and Amazon are currently running a promotion called DVD Decision 2006. Browse the list of 30 Warner titles currently unavailable on DVD... vote for the ones you want... and the top 10 will be released. I've got 6 words for you... Johnathan Cabot is a champion gymnast.

I ask you, how much longer can we go without one of the ultimate 'So Bad It's Good' movies -- Gymkata -- on DVD? You can end this travesty right now. Kurt Thomas needs you. Vote now! Thanks to listener Matt Singer for bringing this important cause to our attention.

Overlooked VHS(!?) Pick: Trust
I was having trouble deciding on an Overlooked DVD Pick this morning when we got this serendipitous email from Kim in Austin, TX: You left Hal Hartley's "Trust" off your top 5 dysfunctional families, and I thought you might remedy it in your top 5 parents list, but no. Sigh ... Someday "Trust" will get its place in the Filmspotting pantheon. I hope."

Not only do I feel bad about excluding "Trust," but I also feel a little guilty about making an impassioned plea for a movie like "Gymkata" to be released on DVD when a far less ironic but bigger crime is that Hal Hartley's 1991 gem is still only available on VHS. This really is a smart, fantastic film -- and a remarkably accessible one for Hartley -- that plays with romantic comedy conventions in ways not wildly different than "The Break-Up." Martin Donovan is great in a 'David-Thewlis-in-Naked' type role playing a highly educated, or at least highly intelligent, societal misfit.

I haven't seen "Trust" in almost 10 years, but I thought it was so cool at the time that when I was putting together my film school short film later that year, I insisted on opening my movie abruptly, without a fade-up or title credit, just like Hartley did with "Trust." Why? Because Hartley is cooler than I am. And I'm not a very original person, nor am I apparently very clever since it's an ambiguous reference that nobody would ever recognize.

Again, sadly, you can't find this film on Peerflix or Netflix, but it really is worth seeking out on VHS. Until "Trust's" DVD prince comes along, Peerflix does have several other Hartley films worth checking out.

Peerflix Giveaway: Dazed and Confused
You just gotta keep on livin', man. L-I-V-I-N. Sign up for a Peerflix account now and you'll be entered to win Dazed and Confused - Criterion Collection, just out on DVD this week. We'll announce the winner on Filmspotting #106 next Tuesday.
