Message from Tony Romero Embedded Systems Product Manager

For equipment companies looking for lowering cost-of-development and minimizing time-to-market, standards-based off-the-shelf components are the right solution; it frees developers to focus on the intellectual property and value-add elements that differentiate their products. Two new standards-based computer architectures that can be utilized in a wide range of applications are AdvancedMC™ (AMC) and MicroTCA™.

AMC modules were initially developed as a mezzanine solution for AdvancedTCA™ (ATCA) to provide flexible configurations. However, with the new MicroTCA specifications, AMCs can be utilized in numerous types of low-profile, cost-effective, high-performance applications.

MicroTCA chassis and AMC modules provide a contemporary architecture for new projects and allows numerous configuration options and scalability in a small space. Applications can leverage its modularity to offer multiple IO options, high-level multi-core processing, multiple storage devices, or leave slots available to scale up when the application requires it. Form-factor options (mid-size, full-size, compact-size, and single or double wide) enable AMC board vendors to offer the appropriate functionality, and enables the application designer to maximize their configuration, upgradeability, and field serviceability.

Performance Technologies’ initial family of AMC products has been developed to cover the processing spectrum with four AMC processor modules. Whether your religion is “x86 or PowerPC”, these modules serve as the basis of any MicroTCA system whether the requirement is cost-optimization or performance driven.

In our continued commitment to fulfill our customers’ development needs, we are getting ready to release several new AMC and MicroTCA products, including an integrated Storage/Video/Audio AMC module, featuring 3D, 2D, and multimedia graphics and SAS/SATA hard drives. Stayed tuned for more details - we think you’ll like it.
