Just to set the record straight, all lubricants tested and approved by Harley-Davidson Motor Company are great choices for your motorcycle. However, if you are willing to do a little experimentation, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the new synthetic lubricant that was introduced in 2003. This lubricant was developed exclusively for Harley-Davidson and Buell engines, transmissions and chain case components. After three years of intensive research and testing, this lubricant can only be described one way: a high performance synthetic lubricant. If you want to change your engine lubricant to SYN3, you can do so at any time - before, during or after the break-in period. Beginning with the 2004 model year, CVO (custom vehicle operations program) model engines, primary chain cases and transmissions will be shipped already featuring SYN3. If you want to change your own engine lubricant, you can safely drain your engine of its existing lubricant (flushing is not required), then top up with SYN3 - be careful not to overfill, as extra oil may find the wrong place to reside and cause you problems! Similarly it is quite safe for your motorcycle to switch back to H-D 360 or other lubricant following use of SYN3 if you so wish. Of course, you could save yourself a lot of trouble and just get your trusty Harley-Davidson service department to do the job for you. Now some of you old timers might be asking, "How come Harley-Davidson Motor Company is now promoting a synthetic lubricant when for years they warned against them?" It's simple. Before the extensive research was done exclusively for Harley-Davidson and Buell on SYN3, the quality and consistency of synthetic lubricants just couldn't be relied upon. It's also interesting to note that unless you are talking about crude, out of the ground, black gold in the first place, you have yourself a synthetic "altered" product with most other lubricants anyway! No chemistry lesson will be given here, but suffice it to say it's a complicated matter. The long and the short of it all is that SYN3 can provide you with reduced oil consumption, improved wear protection, high temperature stability and definitely superior overall performance. So, as you get ready for this season's touring, take a stroll down to your local dealer and have a chat with the service department about the benefits of SYN3.

Professional instructors tell us that the average motorcyclist is very reluctant to lean his or her motorcycle more than 17 degrees. The result? New riders have a greater tendency to run off the road when they encounter a tight turn or find themselves in a traffic situation that requires them to make a sharp turn. Motorcycle tires have changed dramatically in the past few years. The tread wraps around farther and the rubber compound grips the road surface much better. Most motorcycles can lean over more than 30 degrees. Even a dresser with floorboards can be leaned over very aggressively if the need arises. Most foot pegs are equipped with small "feelers" on the lower outer portion of the peg that acts as a warning that you're coming close to the maximum lean angle. They hit the ground first, often causing sparks to fly. That will get your attention every time. It takes practice to build confidence. Go to a large unused parking lot or lightly traveled road and practice leaning. Remember, the farther you can lean your bike, the greater your capability to maneuver, should you find yourself faced with the need to change directions quickly.

Motorcycling is a solo sport with a group dynamic. Unless you have a sidecar, your maximum carry capacity is two people. Harley has solved that dilemma by creating the HOG (Harley Owner's Group) to offer a way for you to get out of the house and share your passion with others. Harley-Davidson motorcycles are driven more miles per year than just about any other brand. We think part of that is related to the HOG clubs. They give you a reason to get out and go to interesting places with interesting people. There's no better way to see how others accessorize their bikes? It's also the best way we know to relieve stress and leave the cares of the day behind. And it gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded people. Who knows, you might even make life-long friends. We are so excited about the HOG club that we'll even pay your first year's membership. Don't be shy. Come join in the fun. Oh yes, there are other wonderful benefits too, but we'd rather talk to you in person about them. If you're a HOG member now, be sure to look over our activities calendar. If you're not a member, look over the calendar and see what fun all the other guys and gals are having, then come and join us.
