Thanksgiving: A harvest of plenty
When the Pilgrims decided to have a Day of Thanksgiving in 1621, the
idea was not a new one. For thousands of years, people celebrated the
bountiful harvest with a thanksgiving festival.
But the Pilgrims were celebrating not simply a harvest, but their
own survival. Starvation had taken many of their group in the
previous winter, and they saw the harvest as a great blessing.
Their guests were most welcome as well. Native Americans had
literally saved the Pilgrims lives by showing them how to survive in
winter, plant in summer, and hunt throughout the year.
The joy of the harvest has, in modern times, focused on the
reunion of families, big dinners, football, and a spirit of
thankfulness.
Happy Thanksgiving from AHAP!
