  • A Different Kind of Courage Premieres

The military Mental Health Self-Assessment Program® has released a new educational video depicting how service members and their families may be affected by combat and deployment stress. A Different Kind of Courage: Safeguarding and Enhancing Your Psychological Health features interviews with military mental health experts and chaplains, as well as personal stories from service and family members. It explores how to cope with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), alcohol abuse, nightmares, hypervigilance, exposure to violence, emotional numbness, and difficulties faced when a loved one is deployed.

The video is a new component of the Mental Health Self-Assessment Program (MHSAP), a DoD funded initiative that offers service personnel and their family members the opportunity to take anonymous mental health and alcohol self-assessments online, via telephone, and at special events held at installations worldwide. The program is designed to help individuals identify their own symptoms and access assistance before a problem becomes serious. The self-assessments are available 24/7 online or via the telephone at www.MilitaryMentalHealth.org and 1-877-877-3647.

A Different Kind of Courage is available to military installations in all branches including the National Guard and Reserve. Read more >

During this transitional period, many teenagers are also dealing with depression. In fact, a federal government survey released last month showed that more than 2 million US teenagers have suffered a serious bout of depression in the past year. On average, 8.5 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17 described having had a major depressive episode in the previous year. Read more >
