U2FP Kicks off 2007 with New Website,

New Washington Symposium & Rally Dates

We have lots of exciting news to kick off 2007. After several months of hard work we're excited to announce a new website design at Unite 2 Fight Paralysis. You'll still find all of the useful advocacy tools and information you expect from U2FP, but we've streamlined the site and improved the appearance and navigation. Let us know how you like it!

Working 2 Walk 2007

Dates for this year's Working 2 Walk Symposium & Rally in Washington, DC, have been set - Mark your calendars for April 22-24! Arrival Day is Sunday, April 22. Monday, April 23, will be an all-day Symposium featuring leaders from both the research and advocacy fields. Tuesday, April 24, is Rally and Legislative Appointments Day. We're thrilled to confirm that Drs. John McDonald, Stephen Davies, and Hans Keirstead are already on the schedule! More details to follow on the Working 2 Walk website.

If you came to Working 2 Walk last year, you already know what an energizing and educational experience it is and will no doubt want to come back. If you weren't able to join us last year, make plans now to support the cure effort and network with the community. These Washington events are always fun and educational. They present the perfect opportunity to meet fellow advocates who share your dream of finding a cure for paralysis. When advocates meet at events like Working 2 Walk, group interaction, shared experiences, and laughter spin the thread from which successful advocacy movements are woven.

Looking Back at 2006

U2FP as an organization and all of you as a patient community made great progress in 2006. We focused much of our effort on passage of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act, with trips to Washington and multiple letter and phone campaigns. In the end we came within a hairs-breadth of passage - closer than ever but still not what we need. We are hopeful that the CRPA will be re-introduced in the 110th Congress.

Working 2 Walk and Bridges 2 Hope

Working 2 Walk was a landmark event in the history of patient advocacy. Many of the most passionate and dedicated scientists in the field of paralysis research shared their visions and progress toward a cure. Advocates old and new gathered in the nation's capital to rally and meet with legislative leaders. W2W 2007 promises to be another major step forward in our advocacy efforts.

We launched Bridges 2 Hope as an advocacy tool that we believe will reach deep into the patient community. B2H has the power to give a face and voice to the thousands of people living with paralysis. We plan to promote this project more aggressively in 2007, and hope to publish a hard-copy book in time for Working 2 Walk 2007. If you haven't submitted your story yet, now is the time. Spread the word about Bridges 2 Hope, and let's see if we can get several hundred entries in the next few months.

Great Work in 2006 - Let's "Go Forward" and really make some noise in 2007!

Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act

The 110th Congress wasted no time in re-introducing the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. As HR 3 the bill passed overwhelmingly (253-174) in the House on January 11. The Senate is scheduled to consider its version (S 5) later in January, where it is also expected to pass.

President Bush has already announced that he will veto this legislation (again!). U2FP joins advocacy groups across the nation in the effort to win enough votes for a veto override. Current analyses estimate that we are 30-40 votes shy of the number needed in the House (the Senate is close to having the 2/3 majority required), so this is where we must concentrate our efforts.

Take a look at this Vote Map to see how your state and individual representatives voted on HR 3. If yours is on the "nay" side, think about how you might appeal to him/her to change their mind. We'll provide more info at U2FP on how to contact your legislator and what to say, so stay tuned. The following websites also provide excellent information:

CAMR (Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research)

CRF (Christopher Reeve Foundation)
