As of 9/17, fax or mail registration for Alumni Weekend Celebration and Alumni BBQ is officially closed. However, due to popular demand, online registration has been extended to Friday, Sept. 21. Beth Shaw '09 Breaks Down Borders Through Summer Grant
If summer is a time of relaxation for some students, it certainly wasn't for LMU junior Beth Shaw. Shaw spent her summer studying immigration at the Office of Peace and Justice, Catholic Charities in Phoenix. Her study was supported by the William Fitzgerald Summer Grant, which supports student internships and volunteer opportunities. [read more]

Welcome Class of 2011
LMU welcomed its freshman class on Aug. 27. These young men and women, 1,275 strong, arrived from as close by as Westchester High School and as far away as Bulgaria. The class is diverse, reflecting the values of the Jesuit and Marymount orders. More than 70 students are international, and 30 percent of the incoming class is from out-of-state, including students from Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Florida, among others. Alumni News Warren Anderson '06 Takes Bronze Medal at Pan American Games
What thoughts would go through your head if you were standing on the podium in front of 100,000 people and were about to receive a bronze medal at the Pan American Games? "It's a surreal experience when you realize how far you've come, how much you've pushed yourself, and that all your hard work wasn't for nothing," said Warren Anderson '06, bronze medalist in rowing at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. When Greg Reiner [CFA '98] accepted the position of managing director of The Actors' Gang, he never thought he would be instrumental in helping transform a small 99-seat theater into a professional theater company with a $1 million budget and tours to cities like Hong Kong, China, and Melbourne, Australia. Career Development Services (CDS) fosters lifelong career fulfillment. Alumni are encouraged to log on to LionJobs to find and apply for positions. Expanded job types now means that LMU alumni can search for entry-level, mid-career, and executive-level jobs. Alumni employers may also list opportunities for fellow alumni and current students. 9/30: "Alumni Can" Make a Difference Food Drive: 54th Annual Alumni BBQ
Yes we CAN! "Alumni Can" Make a Difference at this year's Alumni BBQ. We will be collecting canned food to support the United Farm Workers "Citrus Freeze Crisis Relief." This year's harsh freeze that ravaged California's crops also ravaged the lives of an estimated 28,000 farm workers and their families in the San Joaquin Valley. [read more]

9/20: The 96th Mass of the Holy Spirit
Robert B. Lawton, S.J., president of the university, welcomes the LMU Alumni Community to celebrate the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit in Sacred Heart Chapel at 12 p.m. In a time-honored tradition dating back to the first Jesuit and Marymount institutions of learning, the LMU community will inaugurate the new academic year with this annual celebration. A luncheon in the Sculpture Garden follows the liturgy. [read more]

Asian Pacific Student Services (APSS) invites all alumni to join us for the LMU Asian Pacific American community mixer in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Please join us in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Collins Faculty and Alumni Center Patio on Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. for music, paper lantern-making and delicious Asian food and drink. 9/26: Networking Event for Washington, D.C.-Area Alums
All D.C.-area alumni are invited to network with the California Congressional delegation and their staff. This event promotes all California institutions of higher education to the California Congressional delegation and staff. Hosted cocktails and appetizers. 9/30: Tribute to Cheryl Grills, Ph.D., 5 to 7 p.m.
Alumni are invited to this complimentary dessert reception and tribute to Cheryl (Tawede) Grills, Ph.D., who was recently named chair of the psychology department in the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. This is a landmark appointment for Dr. Grills because she is the first African American woman to hold a chair position in the University's history. Dr. Grills is also celebrating her 20th anniversary as a professor at LMU. R.S.V.P. by Monday, Sept. 24.

10/2: Screening of Left Behind
Alumni are invited to a free screening of the documentary Left Behind: The Story of New Orleans Public Schools, written and directed by Vincent Morelli '78. This gripping 90-minute documentary tells the story of three African-American high school seniors as they navigate through their final year of high school. [read more]

10/13: APSS Power Trip Series, 2 to 7 p.m.
Alumni are invited to join Asian Pacific Student Services (APSS) as they kick off the 2007-08 APSS Power Trip Series. On Saturday, Oct. 13, APSS visits Electric Lodge in Venice, CA for the world premiere of Ken Narasaki's "Innocent When You Dream," winner of the 2006 Pacific Rim Playwrights Award. LMU Athletics Jason Sher Named Head Coach of LMU Tennis Team
After eight seasons with the UCLA men's tennis team, Jason Sher will now get the opportunity to lead his own program, as he was recently named head coach at LMU. Sher earned ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2001. [read more]

Seaver College of Science and Engineering Reaches Record-Breaking Number of Female Students
LMU's efforts to attract and retain female students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors are paying off. According to national statistics, women make up only 25 percent of the STEM workforce. But today, 432 students, or more than 52 percent of those enrolled in LMU's Seaver College, are women.
