Forward to a Colleague
March 20, 2007
Working 2 Walk
is only a month away and looking more exciting all the time. We have some terrific additions to the schedule to announce, as well as reminders of deadlines that are quickly approaching. This opportunity comes around only once a year, so don't miss out on your chance to help in the effort to cure paralysis.

Get informed
at Sunday's Symposium, opening with presentations on "Emerging Therapies - Regenerative and Restorative". Our latest additions to this panel include Dr. W. Dalton Dietrich, Scientific Director of the Miami Project, and Dr. Juanita J. Anders of the Uniformed Services University, whose research focuses on laser therapy. See the Working 2 Walk Schedule page for the most updated list of speakers. A roundtable discussion with patient advocates will follow their presentations.
Representatives from the biotech industry, including Dr. Edward Wirth of Geron Corporation and Dr. Donald Johns from Novartis, will join another roundtable in the afternoon. The group will discuss all aspects of the human clinical trial process.

Our fighting spirit
will be displayed on Tuesday's Rally Stage with a powerful lineup of speakers that includes Daryl "Chill" Mitchell, Sam Schmidt (see bios at right), and well-known cure activist Danny Heumann. We expect several members of Congress to join us again this year.

Important Deadlines . . .
are approaching. Mark your calendar for:
March 22 - last day to book discount lodging at Washington Plaza
March 30 - last day to submit your story to U2FP's award-winning Bridges 2 Hope project for inclusion in the W2W print edition
April 1 - last day to pre-order Souvenir Shirts
April 1 - last day to register at the $100 rate and/or apply for a Registration Grant

Tell your friends and colleagues about Working 2 Walk. It is a truly special event for the paralysis community. Even if they can't attend, they can participate through Bridges 2 Hope or with a financial contribution.

Our Legislative Agenda
is taking shape, and it's time to start working on your legislative appointments. Visit our Meeting With Legislators page for information on scheduling appointments and updates to pending bills.

A new Christopher & Dana Reeve Paralysis Act will be introduced later this month; our U2FP and Working 2 Walk websites will have links to the bill's details once they become available.

Latest word on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (S 5) is that it will NOT come up for a vote in the Senate until after the Spring Recess. Senators will be in their home districts from March 31 - April 9, and we encourage everyone to reach out via phone, fax, email, appointments, and attending town hall meetings to voice your support for this bill. It is possible that the bill will still be at some phase of discussion (either before initial vote or veto over-ride) while we are in Washington.

Stay tuned to the U2FP and Working 2 Walk sites for continuously updated information on all aspects of the cure effort.

Daryl "Chill" Mitchell

Actor Daryl "Chill" Mitchell has numerous TV and movie roles to his credit, but perhaps none so impressive as that of "Eli" on the TV series "Ed". The role came only 9 months after Chill survived a serious motorcycle accident that left him a paraplegic. To read more about Chill's career and current efforts, visit his website.

Sam Schmidt

A successful race car driver in the Indy Racing League, Sam became a C3/4 quadriplegic in a January 2000 high-speed crash. With the support of his family, friends, and the entire motorsport community, Sam worked his way back to a productive life and formed the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation. The Foundation hosts the popular "Day at the Races" for the paralysis community, as well as numerous events to raise money for research.
