Darden Executive Education - EE NEWS
August 2008
Welcome!

The bottom line. The red ink. The ROI. Whatever department you’re in, business is about the numbers. However, effective leaders realize that the numbers are driven by relationships; by employees in service to customers, which creates value for all stakeholders. In this issue of EE News, we discuss the connectivity between a company’s varying disciplines and the relationship to the bottom line. As a leader in executive education, you can rely on Darden to show you the best way to transform current business challenges into opportunities for personal improvement and corporate advances.
Managing for Stakeholders

“The basic idea is quite simple. Business can be understood as a set of relationships among groups that have a stake in the activities that make up the business. Business is about how customers, suppliers, employees, financiers (stockholders, bondholders, banks and so on), communities, and managers interact and create value. To understand a business is to know how these relationships work." The new book Managing for Stakeholders: Survival, Reputation, and Success by Professors R. Edward Freeman, Jeffrey S. Harrison, and Andrew C. Wicks, champions a comprehensive view of leadership versus a strict focus on numbers and shareholder value. The detailed text defines concrete principles and practical techniques for managing all levels of corporate relationships.
In The News

"...many companies already possess the means to turbocharge their sales, break out of industry molds and capture new markets with innovative products and services. Indeed, powerful catalysts for organic growth often exist deep within an organization, hidden and untapped."

Thus asserts an article in the Business Insights section of the July 7, 2008, Wall Street Journal. The article was written by Sean D. Carr and Jeanne M. Liedtka, both of Darden, together with Robert Rosen and Robert E. Wiltbank. These experts spent three years researching the qualities of growth leaders and discovered ordinary people quietly leading innovation and sparking growth.

Jeanne Liedtka was also interviewed at length regarding the research findings during the Thursday July 10, 2008, broadcast of Money for Breakfast on the Fox Business Network.

If, after reading the article, you are interested in learning how to lead organic growth or spark innovation at your company, we encourage you to consider attending one of Darden's Executive Education programs on these topics.

This November, we will hold the inaugural session of Leading Innovation: Thinking Like America’s Greatest Inventive Genius, based in part on the latest book Innovate Like Edison by Batten Fellow Michael Gelb. In an effort to provide a timely, relevant resource for modern organizations facing aggressive change in workforce demographics, new technologies, and global competition, we have added this most compelling program to our Leadership and Change series. Coupled with lessons from Level Three Leadership by Darden Professor Jim Clawson, this new open-enrollment program will provide tangible resources for incorporating contemporary best practices into everyday activities to maximize potential.

Participants in this program will learn to lead innovation at varying levels—studying the planning and implementation processes, through to execution and evaluation—and will return to the workplace with a plan for developing the most core competence—innovation.
