HRET International Conference a Great Success

Now available

New data on international migration of nurses.

Learn More.

On March 22-23, 2007, HRET, the International Hospital Federation, WHO and several other organizations hosted an international conference on the global healthcare workforce needs. Approximately 250 participants across many disciplines from more than 40 countries partook in a dialogue about ensuring a future workforce for all countries. The participants produced action steps for professionals, government, professional associations, donors, and providers. The group came to consensus on several recommendations, including the needs to agree upon a definition of "migration," to create a set of guiding principles for ethical migration that could be widely endorsed, and to identify areas of further collaboration to assure that we have a future global workforce able to provide patient care for all populations. These recommendations and actions will be summarized in a report and posted online at a later date. Conference presentations are available on line and a webcast of plenary sessions will be available online Monday, April 16th. www.hret.org/workforce

Improving Care and Quality of Life at the End of Life

The HBPCC is looking for hospitals interested in learning how to create or improve their own palliative care centers. The program enables hospitals to visit exemplary palliative care learning centers in different regions of the United States. Managed by HRET, the program is funded by a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

The program is free to participating hospitals (with the exception of travel and lodging) and administered through three phases. In Phase One a hospital receives materials to evaluate its goals, strengths, and weaknesses and to construct a customized site visit at a learning lab. Phase Two is the site visit, when the participating hospital learns firsthand about a successful palliative care program and how to transfer that information and approaches to its own situation. During Phase Three participating hospitals receive a CD-ROM toolkit, as well as feedback and support as they implement their program. A HBPCC Web site provides additional information, announcements, and resources.

If you are interested in participating in the Hospital-Based Palliative Care Consortium, please contact Deb Bohr at dbohr@aha.org or (646) 678-4280, or click here for more details.

ACHI Conference Highlights New Orleans' Recovery

Louisiana State Rep. Cheryl Gray addresses the ACHI conference on health and human services recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

HRET's Association for Community Health Improvement (ACHI) held its annual conference with more than 400 participants from March 7-9 in New Orleans. In addition to an agenda focused on effective practices for community benefit, access to care, and chronic disease prevention, several sessions addressed the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The meeting featured a keynote session with John "Jack" Finn, PhD, President and CEO of the Metropolitan Hospital Council of New Orleans; Cheryl Gray, Louisiana State Representative; and Eric Baumgartner, MD, of the Louisiana Public Health Institute. The speakers shared the continuing challenges of rebuilding health systems and public health capacity. Lack of housing, schools, and community services confound attempts to revitalize the health care workforce, and intergovernmental coordination remains a challenge.

Participants also screened a Louisiana Public Broadcasting documentary on health care services during the storm, and 35 attendees volunteered their time in a post-conference community service day. To learn more, visit www.communityhlth.org.

ACHI Volunteers Help Revitalize Hope Haven in New Orleans

ACHI conference attendees volunteer at Hope Haven.

A group of 35 volunteers from the ACHI annual conference stayed an extra day after the conference to help renovate and revitalize a school in New Orleans. Working with Catholic Charities, ACHI members helped to paint and refurbish Hope Haven, a residential facility whose mission is to provide quality residential treatment services, advocate for youth in their family and social contexts, and be a force for positive change in the lives of distressed youth. Everyone was enthusiastic about helping the school.

After working at the school, the group took a bus tour through devastated parts of New Orleans. For more information about ACHI, click here.
