3 Essentials for Successful Networking
A systems project manager with 30 years experience at a Fortune 500
company is suddenly downsized. A college student is trying to find
summer employment related to her major. The parent of a high school
student is helping students set up job shadow experiences. These are
perfect situations where a network can be useful.
Learning how to build and engage your network effectively is a
vital
Career Literacy
(TM) skill. Often misunderstood, networking and its value are
underestimated. Once learned, however, it becomes a way of life,
improving access to information and resources that can make
everyone's life easier - whether seeking a job, industry information,
a reliable babysitter, or a plumber in your neighborhood!
Productive networking is the process of continually meeting new
people in order to establish mutually reciprocal, long-term
relationships. Together, we help each other accomplish personal,
professional or business goals. Through networking, we can extend our
reach to get things done, share our knowledge and capabilities, and
connect people to one another.
1. Pick organizations where you can become involved in meaningful
activities.

9 Nifty Networking Resources to Share with Friends
"Where do I start to build my network?" Great question. Here are some
helpful books, articles and websites that can steer you in the right
direction. Let us know if you know of other resources we can share.
1. The care and feeding of relationships starts with
"Seven Career Networking Tips for College Students."
on CollegeRecruiter.com.
2. "Networking for Success: The Art of Establishing Personal
Contacts" by Nancy Flynn. This concise book provides the tools to
initiate a networking plan with specific goals, establish
relationships that are meaningful and long-term, use electronic media
to expand your network, and develop ways to appropriately promote
yourself through your networking. If you access the website of the
publisher,
Thomson Course Technology, and
enter "networking" in the search box, you'll find a free networking
assessment.
3. "Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty: The Only Networking
Guide You'll Ever Need" is a classic by Harvey Mackay, a well-known
business author. He offers practical advice with wit and wisdom.

Career Vision Partners to Provide Programs for Gifted Students
Our partners, the
Center for Talent Development
(CTD) at Northwestern University and the
Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth
(WCATY) in Madison, are two unique organizations that support
families and provide enrichment programs for gifted students.
For two years, Career Vision staff has worked with the Center for
Talent Development providing an article for their newsletter,
"Talent", and developing and presenting educational programs for both
students and parents. Over 180 parents attended our sessions on "How
to Help Your Gifted Child with Career Decisions." Through the Midwest
Academic Talent Search and other school-year and summer programs,
this fine organization has assisted more than 500,000 families with
gifted students ages 4 to 18.
Check out the great resources on their
website for
educators, parents and students as well as their many excellent
programs. You might also be interested in the article,
"Early Career Planning is Essential for Gifted Adolescents."
Word of mouth and referrals are how Career Vision expands its
services for individuals. The same is true for our work with
organizations. Due to the success of the Center for Talent
Development relationship, we have been invited by the Wisconsin
Center for Academically Talented Youth to co-develop and kick off
their first "Career and College Planning Exploration Program."
