Updates Needed for Daylight Savings Time
As a reminder to everyone reading this newsletter . . . recent changes in the way we observe daylight savings time have made it necessary to patch the operating systems of all computer platforms. The new daylight savings goes into effect three works earlier, this year (March 11, 2007).
Please make sure all systems (workstations and servers) are patched in the next few weeks. This is absolutely critical on all Windows workstations and clients, as well as Macintosh workstations and clients. Please call us if you need help with the updates. You can find a link to Apple's updates here.

New Apple Store Opens in Hawaii
Apple Computer, Inc. opened its second retail store in Hawaii on Saturday, February 10th. The 5,000 square foot Apple store is located in Kahala Mall, in East Oahu, which many consider to be one of Honolulu's most upscale neighborhoods. To celebrate its grand opening, Apple gave away a Digital Lifestyle Collection, featuring a new 2.0GHz Intel Duo Core MacBook, an iPod nano and other great prizes.
The Kahala Mall store is Apple's second in the islands. Their first store opened in May of 2003 at the Ala Moana Shopping Center - two years after Apple began rolling out its company-owned retail stores. The Ala Moana store has been extremely successful and is one of the busiest in the nation. Nevertheless, many Hawaii residents were surprised to learn that Apple chose Kahala for its second location, as the two stores will be barely five miles apart. With Apple continuing to develop the industry's most innovative products and its steady growth in market share, however, there should be enough demand to keep both Oahu stores very busy indeed.

$1.31 per gigabyte. Redundant, hot-swappable components and
integrated remote monitoring keep your data online and available.

Tiger Up-close: Spotlight
Mac OS X Tiger introduces an innovative new systemwide search engine
that can instantly search through everything on your computer.
Spotlight is built into Mac OS X, offering searching
capabilities unprecedented on a desktop computer.
Spotlight searches filenames, text content, and metadata
to find virtually anything on your hard drive that matters, including
documents, images, movies, music, PDFs, email messages, iCal events,
and contacts. Most important, searches are very fast. The metadata
engine makes searching smarter, more flexible, and more powerful by
indexing the descriptive informational items in your files and
documents. Metadata describes the "what, when, and who" of every
piece of information on your Mac: the kind of content, author, edit
history, format, size, and many more details. By using this indexed
information for searching, Spotlight taps into tremendous
power and accuracy for refining search results.
Spotlight begins returning search results as you type,
and refines those results as you add to your search criteria.
Spotlight results are always up-to-the-moment accurate. The
Spotlight engine automatically takes all the content and
metadata inside files and enabled applications and puts it in a
high-performance index. This process occurs transparently and in the
background, so when you make a change, such as adding a new file,
receiving an email, or entering a new contact, the metadata engine
updates its index automatically. This way your searches always
reflect the latest state of the files on your system.
And Spotlight is multilingual. Tapping the power of the
Unicode-based text system in Mac OS X, Spotlight can find
anything in any language that can be displayed in Mac OS X.

Tiger Up-close: Automator
Automator makes it easy to accomplish all of your
time-consuming, repetitive manual tasks quickly, efficiently, and
effortlessly with Automator workflows. It's simple to create
custom workflows just by dragging items, pointing, and clicking.
Perform the task once or many times using an
Automator workflow.
Easy-to-understand application actions are the building blocks,
so you don't have to write any code-no technical expertise required.
Actions can be dragged into your Automator workflow. Each
action has all of the options and settings you need; you don't have
to work hard to figure out how to make it work. You can even
incorporate Spotlight searching into workflows to identify items
automatically.
Tiger includes a number of built-in actions, and developers can
add actions for their applications. Workflows are reusable-you can
save them to use later or share with friends and colleagues. Best of
all, they give you access to some of the most powerful technologies
in Mac OS X without requiring you to write any code.
