Global Life Sciences Businesses Must Prepare to Battle for Talent

A new Ernst & Young report on the top 10 strategic risks for global businesses has identified an aging consumer and workforce as among the top ten business concerns. The report, a survey of over 70 analysts worldwide, details the top risks across twelve of the world's most important industry sectors including biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

The report also describes the five fastest-rising threats that could significantly impact global business over the next three to five years. Of these threats, the “war for talent” or employers’ struggle to find the most highly skilled employees tops the list.

The biotechnology sector especially faces a talent crunch. According to Ernst & Young’s analysis, “of the twelve sectors we have surveyed on strategic business risk, biotech is considered to be facing the most immediate challenges in the much-publicized global war for talent.” The report credits these challenges to the low number of US science grads which necessitates that companies look globally for qualified talent. The report also cites increasing difficulties in securing work visas for these international employees and the clustering of talent by geographical region driving some companies to relocate for better access to a larger talent pool.
