RECENT ARTICLES AND PUBLICATIONS
Article on Physician-Owned ASCs by HRET Staff Member
The paper entitled "Where Do I Send Thee? Does Physician-Ownership Affect Referral Patterns To Ambulatory Surgery Centers?" co-authored by Ray Kang, senior researcher at HRET, asks: Are physicians who are leading referrers to physician-owned ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) more likely to send Medicaid patients to hospital
outpatient clinics than other patients? Findings indicate that physicians at physician-owned facilities are more likely than other physicians to refer well-insured patients to their facilities and route Medicaid patients to hospital outpatient clinics. To read the full article, click here.

H&HN OutBox: HIV Testing in the ED
The March 2008 issue of Hospitals & Health Networks features the OutBox column "HIV Testing in the ED" by Gretchen Williams Torres, director of research at HRET. The article discusses the need for HIV testing in EDs, which are potentially fertile grounds for testing high volumes of diverse patient populations and
reaching those without a regular source of care. Currently, testing for HIV occurs in many EDs but is limited to cases of occupational exposure or at the provider's discretion based on clinical presentation or other risk factors. To date, programs of widespread screening for HIV in EDs are nonexistent, even for high-risk patients. But many busy urban EDs have found that HIV testing is feasible. To

H&HN Online: Collecting Data to Improve Patient Care
"Collecting Data to Improve Patient Care," by Cynthia Hedges Greising of HRET, was featured in H&HN Online in February. The article discussed the new HRET Disparities Toolkit and how it can help hospitals gather data on race, ethnicity, and primary language from patients. The toolkit not only provides a uniform
framework for collecting and using the data but also includes training presentations and model approaches as well as a section on communicating with patients who are deaf or hard of hearing. Click here to read the full article or to view the toolkit.
